To put it simply, the Hype Machine keeps track of what music bloggers write about. We handpick a set of kickass music blogs and then present what they discuss for easy analysis, consumption and discovery. This way, your odds of stumbling into awesome music or awesome blogs are high. Click here to read more about how we select blogs.

Get Started

We offer a few ways to explore the music that flows through our site:

Latest: What’s going on right now in the blogosphere.

Popular: The most popular artists, searches and blogs on the internet right now.

Twitter: Interactive music chart of songs being posted on Twitter.

Radio: An eclectic non-stop radio stream of blogged tracks from the past week

Spy: Snoop on what other people are listening to on our site.

Zeitgeist: The best 50 artists, albums and songs of the year.

Dashboard: A customizable view of your favorite tracks, artists, blogs and users.

Why?

We are creating tools that empower independent voices that write about music. We think a select group of passionate people can produce more engaging conversation than a huge social mob, or a rigid hierarchy of editors. We amplify their posts and the audio they choose, to help this vibrant culture spread.

Oh yeah, music runs in our veins. You already figured that out though.

How does it work?

The Hype Machine tracks a variety of MP3 blogs. If a post contains MP3 links, it adds those links to its database and displays them on the front page.

Some of the frequently accessed tracks are cached by the Hype Machine server, much like Google Search caches web pages, to reduce load on the bloggers’ servers and protect their bandwidth.

Those tracks are NOT available for download, but you can preview them via the play buttons that are next to each track.

The blog that posted a particular track is identified under every track by name so you can read more about why they posted it. If you enjoyed a track someone posted, stop by and let them know!

You can purchase CDs and individual tracks by using the “amazon” and “itunes” links that appear next to most tracks. Each purchase you make supports both the artists and the Hype Machine. Please buy and enjoy.

Genius Idea: Launched by two students at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton business school, Kembrel is a private shopping community for just for college students. The site has partnered with a few well-known lifestyle brands to offer deep discounts on goods during a limited window of time.

To give you an idea of the specifics, most of these discounts range from 40% to 75% off the retail price of the item in question, and sales generally start at 9 p.m. EST and last for just five days.

The company’s goal is to help students discover new brands and obtain highly coveted products while saving a lot of money, possibly avoiding a starving student scenario or two. Of course, such a store also gives brands optimal exposure to an important demographic and helps them build long-term relationships with their customers through a combination of social e-commerce and community management.

Kembrel isn’t the first company to start using Facebook as an e-commerce platform. In fact, we wrote recently about Delta selling tickets via Facebook. Right now, Kembrel can be accessed through the main website or via its Facebook store. It’s also not the first students-only app (we covered one of those a few days ago) or the first limited-window-of-time sales app (Groupon, anyone?). Still, it’s a clever mashup of all these ideas, and it’s offering some killer deals.

We can imagine many a college student getting excited about an exclusive, half-off American Apparel sale or a back-to-school special on iPhone accessories. And we can imagine investors getting excited about a good-looking app built on top of a far-reaching platform that also has out-of-the-box revenue potential.

What do you think of Kembrel so far?

Cool challenge to show your drinking speed and coordination. See who can keep it together while they’re chugging the best!

Equipment-

1 Cans of Beer

6 Red Cups

Stopwatch

Set up-

Take your beer and pour it into the 6 cups evenly. Place these cups on a flat surface like a table.

Game Play-

Have someone ready to record the time. As soon as you pick up the first cup, this person will start timing you. Chug the 6 cups as fast as you can. After you finish the last cup you must arrange them into a pyramid. You must complete a stable pyramid (it can’t fall apart). Once you have finished the pyramid you must stack the cups back on top of each other and that is when the task is finished. Record your times, the person with the fastest time of finishing their beer, making the pyramid, and stacking the cups wins. Be sure to challenge the winner if you feel robbed afterwards.

This is another straight forward simple game, the best kind. You will end up very drunk, very quickly if you play this. The necessary materials are: people, lots of beer, and a designated time keeper.

Every minute for 100 minutes, each player takes a shot of beer (1 oz or 1.5 oz, you choose). At one oz, this equates to just short of nine cans of beer in just over 1.5 hours. That’s a lot of beer.

The game starts out slow, but in the later rounds you wonder where the time went.

It helps to have a timekeeper because otherwise, you tend to miss a few shots in there.

Remember, not everyone makes it to 100. But if you do, feel proud.

One of those classic endeavors that leaves everyone wet and drunk. Very high buzz factor. Supplies: people and lots of beer.

Have everybody divide up into two even teams. Each team lines up opposite each other, preferably down a long table, or just sitting on the ground. Fill each glass full of beer and place in on the table in front of each player. The players can not touch their glass before they are allowed. The first players on each team start the game by drinking all of their beer and setting the glass back on the table. When the glass touches the table the second person drinks his beer and sets his glass on the table. This continues until the last beer is gone. The first team to place their last empty glass on the table wins. Wins what you may ask? Nothing.

Alternate version: each player has two glasses of beer. The race goes down the line and returns. That means the turn-around players have to drink two beers in a row.

small mixed drink (e.g. whiskey sour)
tall mixed drink (e.g. Tom Collins)
glass of white wine
12 oz beer

Participants roll a die in turn. The first to get a 6 drinks the schnapps. The next to get a 6 removes the coaster that was under it. The next drinks the small drink, the next removes the coaster, and so on.

The next to roll always waits to roll until the previous person has drunk (or removed the coaster) EXCEPT when the beer is drunk. When that happens, the game speeds up, because if someone rolls a 6 before the person drinking the beer finishes it, the beer-drinker must pay for the whole tower. If the beer drinker finishes first, then the next person to roll a 6 (the beer drinker is exempt) pays.

A game of fierce skill in the land of the very high buzz. You’re going to need two card tables, ping pong balls, and of course, beer.

Set up the card tables on opposite sides of a room, the farther apart, the greater the challenge. Place a cup of beer on the far table for each player.

Each player takes turns bouncing a ball off the near table trying to land the ball in the cup on the far table. If a player bounces a ball that does not make it to the opposite table, that player must drink from his/her beer. If a player is successful in landing the ball in an opponents cup, the opponent must immediately bounce a ball into the cup of the successful player. If unsuccessful in the match, that person must drink the entire cup of beer with the ball in it. But, if the challenger is successful, the first player must drink his entire beer.

If you ever land the ball in your own cup, you must drink the entire beer with the ball in it.
