The Hype Machine

What is it?

To put it simply, the Hype Machine keeps track of what music bloggers write about. We handpick a set of kickass music blogs and then present what they discuss for easy analysis, consumption and discovery. This way, your odds of stumbling into awesome music or awesome blogs are high. Click here to read more about how we select blogs.

Get Started

We offer a few ways to explore the music that flows through our site:

  • Latest: What’s going on right now in the blogosphere.
  • Popular: The most popular artists, searches and blogs on the internet right now.
  • Twitter: Interactive music chart of songs being posted on Twitter.
  • Radio: An eclectic non-stop radio stream of blogged tracks from the past week
  • Spy: Snoop on what other people are listening to on our site.
  • Zeitgeist: The best 50 artists, albums and songs of the year.
  • Dashboard: A customizable view of your favorite tracks, artists, blogs and users.

Why?

We are creating tools that empower independent voices that write about music. We think a select group of passionate people can produce more engaging conversation than a huge social mob, or a rigid hierarchy of editors. We amplify their posts and the audio they choose, to help this vibrant culture spread.

Oh yeah, music runs in our veins. You already figured that out though.

How does it work?

The Hype Machine tracks a variety of MP3 blogs. If a post contains MP3 links, it adds those links to its database and displays them on the front page.

Some of the frequently accessed tracks are cached by the Hype Machine server, much like Google Search caches web pages, to reduce load on the bloggers’ servers and protect their bandwidth.

Those tracks are NOT available for download, but you can preview them via the play buttons that are next to each track.

The blog that posted a particular track is identified under every track by name so you can read more about why they posted it. If you enjoyed a track someone posted, stop by and let them know!

You can purchase CDs and individual tracks by using the “amazon” and “itunes” links that appear next to most tracks. Each purchase you make supports both the artists and the Hype Machine. Please buy and enjoy.

Kembrel

Genius Idea: Launched by two students at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton business school, Kembrel is a private shopping community for just for college students. The site has partnered with a few well-known lifestyle brands to offer deep discounts on goods during a limited window of time.

To give you an idea of the specifics, most of these discounts range from 40% to 75% off the retail price of the item in question, and sales generally start at 9 p.m. EST and last for just five days.

The company’s goal is to help students discover new brands and obtain highly coveted products while saving a lot of money, possibly avoiding a starving student scenario or two. Of course, such a store also gives brands optimal exposure to an important demographic and helps them build long-term relationships with their customers through a combination of social e-commerce and community management.

Kembrel isn’t the first company to start using Facebook as an e-commerce platform. In fact, we wrote recently about Delta selling tickets via Facebook. Right now, Kembrel can be accessed through the main website or via its Facebook store. It’s also not the first students-only app (we covered one of those a few days ago) or the first limited-window-of-time sales app (Groupon, anyone?). Still, it’s a clever mashup of all these ideas, and it’s offering some killer deals.

We can imagine many a college student getting excited about an exclusive, half-off American Apparel sale or a back-to-school special on iPhone accessories. And we can imagine investors getting excited about a good-looking app built on top of a far-reaching platform that also has out-of-the-box revenue potential.

What do you think of Kembrel so far?

Drinking Game: S*M*A*S*H

A very very very fun game. Very high buzz factor. Supplies: people, beer, and episodes of M*A*S*H, the televison show.

Simple rules: watch the show, any time a rank is said, drink. (ie. corporal, private, major, etc).

Drinking Game: Beer Pyramid

Summary-

Cool challenge to show your drinking speed and coordination. See who can keep it together while they’re chugging the best!

Equipment-

  • 1 Cans of Beer
  • 6 Red Cups
  • Stopwatch

Set up-

Take your beer and pour it into the 6 cups evenly. Place these cups on a flat surface like a table.

Game Play-

Have someone ready to record the time. As soon as you pick up the first cup, this person will start timing you. Chug the 6 cups as fast as you can. After you finish the last cup you must arrange them into a pyramid. You must complete a stable pyramid (it can’t fall apart). Once you have finished the pyramid you must stack the cups back on top of each other and that is when the task is finished. Record your times, the person with the fastest time of finishing their beer, making the pyramid, and stacking the cups wins. Be sure to challenge the winner if you feel robbed afterwards.
